Updated October 2026

The core furniture clearance guidelines are simple: leave 14–18 inches (36–46 cm) between a sofa and coffee table, 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) between major pieces, 24 inches (61 cm) minimum beside a bed, and 36 inches (91 cm) for main walkways. In kitchens, the National Kitchen & Bath Association recommends work aisles of at least 42 inches (107 cm) for one cook.

Below is every number in one place, in inches and centimeters, plus where you can safely go tighter in a small apartment. One note before you start: these are design guidelines, not building code. Local codes and your building's rules always come first.

Quick reference: furniture clearance guidelines in inches and cm

If you only need the numbers, this is the list. Each figure comes from the sources named in the sections below: Homes & Gardens for living rooms, Homestyler for bedrooms and the NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines for kitchens and dining. Use the larger number when you can and the smaller one when space forces you to.

  • Sofa to coffee table: 14–18 in (36–46 cm)

  • Sofa to side table: 2–4 in (5–10 cm)

  • Between major furniture pieces: 30–36 in (76–91 cm), or 24 in (61 cm) in tight spaces

  • Sofa back to wall: 3–5 in (8–13 cm)

  • TV viewing distance: 1.5–2.5 × the screen diagonal

  • TV center height: 42–48 in (107–122 cm) from the floor

  • Rug edge to wall: 12–18 in (30–46 cm) of bare floor

  • Beside the bed: 24 in (61 cm) minimum, ideally 30–36 in (76–91 cm)

  • Foot of the bed: 30–36 in (76–91 cm) if furniture faces it

  • Primary walkways: 36 in (91 cm)

  • Kitchen walkway: 36 in (914 mm) minimum

  • Kitchen work aisle: 42 in (1,067 mm) for one cook, 48 in (1,219 mm) for two or more

  • Behind seated diners, no traffic: 32 in (813 mm)

  • Behind seated diners, people passing: 36–44 in (914–1,118 mm)

  • Pendant over a table: 30–36 in (76–91 cm) above the tabletop

How much space should be between a couch and a coffee table?

Leave 14–18 inches (36–46 cm) between the front of the sofa and the edge of the coffee table. That is close enough to reach a drink without leaning and far enough to walk past your own knees. Interior designer Izabela Tokarski gives this range in Homes & Gardens' living room clearance guide.

The rest of the living room, from the same guide:

  • Side tables: 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) from the sofa arm, so the surface is within reach.

  • Major pieces: 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) between a sofa and an armchair, or between seating and a console. In tight spaces, 24 inches (61 cm) works.

  • Behind the sofa: 3–5 inches (8–13 cm) from the wall, so the sofa doesn't scuff it and curtains can hang freely.

How far should a TV be from the sofa?

Sit 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen's diagonal away from the TV. For a 55-inch TV that is about 7–11.5 feet (2.1–3.5 m); for a 65-inch TV, about 8–13.5 feet (2.5–4.1 m). Mount it so the center of the screen is 42–48 inches (107–122 cm) from the floor, roughly at seated eye level.

In a small apartment, this rule often decides the TV size for you. If your sofa can only sit 6 feet (1.8 m) from the wall, a 65-inch screen will dominate the room. Size the TV to the distance you have, not the other way round.

How much room do you need around a bed?

Allow at least 24 inches (61 cm) of walkway on the side or sides you use, ideally 30–36 inches (76–91 cm), according to Homestyler's bed size guide. If a dresser or bench faces the foot of the bed, keep 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) there too.

Standard mattress sizes from the same guide, so you can test your room:

  • Twin: about 38 × 75 in (97 × 191 cm)

  • Full: about 54 × 75 in (137 × 191 cm)

  • Queen: about 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm)

Bed frames add to these, so measure the frame you plan to buy, not just the mattress. Homestyler also notes that drawers need roughly 36–42 inches (91–107 cm) in total once you count the open drawer plus standing space, which matters for dressers facing a bed. Swapping a hinged door for a pocket or barn door can free up swing space in a tight bedroom.

What are the kitchen and dining clearance guidelines?

The NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines set a 36-inch (914 mm) minimum for walkways and a 42-inch (1,067 mm) work aisle for one cook, or 48 inches (1,219 mm) for two. At a table or counter, allow 32 inches (813 mm) behind seated diners if no one needs to walk past.

The NKBA numbers worth knowing for small homes:

  • Dining with traffic behind: 36 inches (914 mm) to edge past a seated diner, 44 inches (1,118 mm) to walk past comfortably.

  • Dishwasher: at least 21 inches (533 mm) of standing space between the open dishwasher and cabinets or appliances at a right angle to it.

  • Sink landing areas: at least 24 inches (610 mm) of counter on one side and 18 inches (457 mm) on the other.

For a dining table against a wall, the 32-inch (813 mm) figure is your minimum from the table edge to the wall on any side where someone sits.

Where can you safely go tighter in a small apartment?

In small spaces you can drop secondary paths to 24 inches (61 cm), use one bedside walkway instead of two, and push a table against the wall to remove a whole seating side. Keep full clearances on the main route from the door, in the kitchen work aisle and at the fridge and oven, where a squeeze is a daily annoyance or a safety issue.

Where we're comfortable going tighter on small-apartment projects:

  1. Bed sides: one 24-inch (61 cm) side is fine for a single sleeper or a guest bed.

  2. Coffee table: swap it for a small ottoman or nesting tables you can move away.

  3. Dining: a bench against the wall needs no chair pull-out space on that side.

  4. Behind the sofa: if the sofa floats as a divider, 24 inches (61 cm) behind it can become a secondary path.

Where not to cheat: the entry path, the path to the window or balcony, and anywhere doors or drawers swing open.

How big should a rug be, and how high should lights hang?

Leave 12–18 inches (30–46 cm) of bare floor between the rug and the walls, per Homes & Gardens. Hang pendants 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) above a dining table, and about 84 inches (213 cm) above the floor elsewhere, so no one walks into them.

In a small living room, a rug that's too small makes the room feel smaller. Choose one large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it, which ties the zone together. In a studio, a rug is also the cheapest room divider you can buy; see our studio apartment layout ideas for how to use it.

How do you check clearances on a floorplan before buying furniture?

Draw your furniture to scale on the floorplan, then measure the gaps between pieces against the numbers above. Use the furniture's real dimensions from the product page, include door swings and drawer pulls, and check the route from the front door to every room. If a gap comes in under 24 inches (61 cm), change something before you buy.

  1. Get a to-scale plan, or measure the room yourself including window and door positions.

  2. Mark fixed points: doors and their swing, windows, radiators or AC units, outlets.

  3. Draw each piece at its real size, using the dimensions from the product listing.

  4. Measure every gap. Check it against this guide.

  5. Walk the main routes on paper: door to sofa, door to kitchen, bed to bathroom.

Our free Floorplan Self-Audit checklist turns these steps into a printable list. If you are still choosing a home, read what to look for in a floor plan before you buy.

FAQ

What is the minimum walkway width in a living room?

Aim for 36 inches (91 cm) on primary walkways and 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) between major pieces of furniture. In tight spaces, 24 inches (61 cm) is the practical minimum for a secondary path. These are design guidelines from Homestyler and Homes & Gardens, not building code.

How much space do you need behind a dining chair?

The NKBA recommends 32 inches (813 mm) from the table edge to a wall when no one walks behind the diners. If people need to pass, allow 36 inches (914 mm) to edge past and 44 inches (1,118 mm) to walk past comfortably.

How much space should be between a kitchen island and counters?

The NKBA recommends a work aisle of at least 42 inches (1,067 mm) for one cook and 48 inches (1,219 mm) for more than one. A walkway that isn't a work area can be 36 inches (914 mm).

Are furniture clearance guidelines the same as building code?

No. Furniture clearance guidelines are recommendations from designers and industry bodies like the NKBA. Building codes cover things like exits, stairs and accessibility, and they vary by country and city, so check your local rules for anything structural or safety-related.

How far should a coffee table be from a sofa in centimeters?

About 36–46 cm, the metric equivalent of the 14–18 inches designers recommend. That keeps the table within reach without blocking legroom.
